CSM Receives Grant from American Association of University Women

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) recently awarded a $4,700 grant to the College of Science & Mathematics to fund a series of events intended to promote and cultivate career leadership skills within female undergraduate STEM students at Rowan.

The project adviser, Dr. Tricia Yurak, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, will be working with the WINGS (Women Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists) student organization's President Kelso Borrell and Vice President Kayla Green to coordinate the events to be held during the spring 2017 semester.

Today, female STEM students face challenges and biases in society particularly because they have chosen majors in which females tend to be underrepresented in the first place. According to Yurak, an interest in leadership that can be developed while students are in college can help them start strengthening those skills to be used now, but also throughout the remainder of their academic and professional careers.

"The project that I proposed to AAUW was a series of events that will take place between January and June. The events will include hosting external speakers from regional industries, workshops for the students and a networking event to be held at the Glassboro Marriott," said Yurak. "We want to see more and more women bring leadership skills to the table in their careers."
